Nashville, 10:00 a.m.

Finley had been buzzed through the gate, but so far she’d had no luck getting anyone to the door. Had to be someone in there. She pressed the bell again.

“It’s Finley O’Sullivan,” she called out. “Is anyone home?”

Another stretch of silence had Finley considering checking windows and doors for alternative avenues of entrance.

“Only me.”

The words were barely audible, but they seemed to come from just the other side of the door.

“Cecelia, is that you?”

Extended pause, then, “Yes.”

“Is your mother home?”

“No.”

“May I come in? I’d really like to speak with you.”

“I . . . I can’t open the door.”

Finley considered their options. “I understand. How about you unlock the door, then go into another room. Maybe the same room where we talked the other day. I’ll join you there.”

Long pause.

“Okay . . . but be sure to lock the door behind you.”

“I will. I promise.” The opportunity to see her alone could be useful. The mother had seemed to control the conversation during their one interview. Cecelia might open up more if it was just the two of them.

The click of the lock had Finley’s anticipation mounting.

She waited a sufficient amount of time for Cecelia to have reached the living room, then opened the door and closed and locked it behind her.

“I’m inside, and I’ve locked the door,” Finley called out.

A thin “Okay” floated back to her.

Finley found Cecelia in the living room snuggled into one corner of the sofa. This time she wore joggers and a hoodie. The hood covered her hair and shadowed her face.

“Thanks for agreeing to speak with me.” Finley settled into a chair across the elegant coffee table from her.

Cecelia picked at her nails, her gaze only briefly flitting to Finley. “Sure.”

“Where’s your mother this morning?”

Listless shrug. “I don’t know. She had stuff to do, I guess.”

“Do you spend a lot of time here alone?” Seemed strange to Finley that her mother would leave her alone if she were so unstable.

“Sometimes. Mother has a lot of social obligations. I’ve lost count of the charity projects she supports.”

“You never go with her?”

Her eyes did meet Finley’s now. “I haven’t left this house in like four years.” She stared at her hands once more. “I can’t do it.”

Her words were sincere, but she averted eye contact as she said them. Then she squirmed a little as if she couldn’t get comfortable.

Finley moved on to the reason she was here. “Olivia is worried that you’re feeling overly upset about this Holmes situation.”

Another vague shrug. “I don’t like it. He’s lying and making everyone think I did something wrong, and I didn’t.”

“I hate when people do that.” Finley made a face, not that Cecelia would notice since she kept her attention cast downward. “We’ll find the truth, and this time it will be over for good.”

Cecelia lifted her gaze, locked it with Finley’s. “Do you really think you can? The truth is hidden sometimes. Finding it isn’t always easy.”

“I’m very good at finding things,” Finley assured her.
